Who We Are

The Georgia Alliance of Preservation Commissions (GAPC)
is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to local historic preservation commissions.

Origin Story

In June 1983 at the Grassroots Preservation Conference at Georgia State University, a consensus among local commission members was reached that an association of local commissions was needed to encourage communication and interaction among preservation organizations. In March 1984, GAPC was officially inaugurated at a workshop for historic district commissions held in Macon.

Our Mission

Through education, outreach, and collaboration, we strengthen Georgia's local historic preservation commissions.

Our Vision

To be the go-to resource for conversation, learning, and guidance among Georgia's local historic preservation commissions.

How we go about achieving this

  • Provide a forum to promote communication between historic preservation commissions and help coordinate their efforts throughout the state;
  • Promote and support educational activities that enable preservation commissions to more effectively administer local programs and ordinances;
  • Serve as a public information and educational resource for and about matters affecting historic districts and the work of preservation commissions;
  • And as a public charity, donors to GAPC can further our mission and deduct contributions under IRC Section 170.
